On Saturday 13th September, Exeter University Touch Rugby Club (EUTRC) took 4 teams to play in the University National Touch Series (Round 1 South) held in Oxford and we couldn’t be prouder of how they all performed. Due to the pandemic, we haven’t played in an official tournament since early 2020 – so to finish with two Exeter teams in the top 3 is absolutely incredible!
All of our club members played with excellent intensity, momentum and technique, and also maintained a positive and respectful attitude throughout. Well done to each and every player!!
The final standings for Round 1 South, out of the 13 teams that took part, are as follows:
Exeter Hurricanes (1s) | 1st place |
Exeter Monsoon (2s) | 3rd place |
Exeter Typhoons (3s) | 8th place |
Exeter Storm (4s) | 7th place |
The highlights from the final matches of the day that decided Exeter’s final standings are below:
Exeter Hurricanes (1s) vs Bath Hawks (1s)
5-3 to Exeter 1s
After what started as a close final, Exeter ultimately dominated in the second half to take home the Cup and finish top of the leaderboard in this round. Tries from MVP Dan Coughlan undoubtedly helped lead the team to victory.
Exeter Monsoon (2s) vs Bath Sparrows (2s)
6-0 to Exeter 2s
This match was highly anticipated by our 2s, due to our historic rivalry with Bath. The scoreline speaks for itself; Bath were no match for our 2s team captained by Rhys Jones and Exeter came away with a clean sweep, finishing 3rd overall in the competition. Perhaps in the next round we can expect a full Exeter final?
Exeter Typhoon (3s) vs Exeter Storm (4s)
2-4 to Exeter 4s
This play-off was tense before the match even began, with both Exeter teams looking to dominate. The match began with a try from the 4s and remained closely-run until the second half, with the 4s ultimately winning. A try from MVP Conor Devlin-Cook in the final seconds helped to secure a win for Exeter Storm.
Congratulations to our Captains, Vice Captains and MVPs – and a HUGE thank you to our coaches. You’re amazing! Thanks must also go to England Touch for hosting another enjoyable tournament, and to all the other teams who participated and made us work even harder towards our goals.
